Understand New York and New Jersey laws and regulations for assisted living facilities
When families search for assisted living, a primary concern is safety. Families want to feel confident that their loved ones are properly taken care of and live in safe, secure conditions. This is why it’s important to have some understanding of NYC assisted living laws and regulations as you conduct your search.
The New York State Department of Health is the overarching agency that evaluates and regulates assisted living facilities in NYC. Its Adult Care Facilities/Assisted Living division oversees assisted living and other adult care facilities in New York City and performs regular inspections to ensure quality and safety.
New Jersey has an extensive list of assisted living regulations, which cover everything from licensing to resident rights and staff requirements. The New Jersey Department of Health performs random facility inspections to assess all procedures and resident care.

Preventing the spread of COVID-19 remains a high priority for Los Angeles County and its residents. Read Los Angeles County Public Health’s current COVID-19 guidelines for frequently updated information.
In addition, assisted living facilities must follow the county’s COVID-19 guidelines for care facilities:
Masking
Masking. Staff and visitors are required to wear masks indoors. Residents are encouraged to wear masks indoors, but they aren’t required to do so.
Vaccinations
COVID-19 vaccines must be made available to all residents, and staff must receive at least one dose of the vaccination.
Staff Safety
Staff must use appropriate personal protective equipment when called for.
Facility Cleanliness
Surfaces must be frequently disinfected, and instructional signage should be hung throughout the facility to encourage frequent hand-washing and other infection prevention practices.

Because the NYC metro is a sprawling area with a high population, there are a number of assisted living options available, ranging from high-end options in the heart of Manhattan to more affordable traditional assisted living residences in the surrounding metro areas.
Many of A Place for Mom’s assisted living communities in Los Angeles offer on-site memory care services, which cater to residents who have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. These communities offer uniquely structured environments, highly trained caregivers, and specialized cognitive therapies.
When seniors choose an assisted living facility that also offers memory care services, the specialized services may be offered in the same residence, in another wing of the facility, or in a different on-campus building. The benefit of choosing such a facility is that seniors don’t have to worry about moving to a different community should their cognitive care needs change.
Los Angeles also has many assisted living options that offer a more relaxed and homelike setting, which differs from larger facilities. Often referred to as board and care homes or residential care homes, these assisted living options provide the same level of assistance in a residential home. The difference is that that these homes typically house fewer residents, meaning each senior is able to receive a more personalized level care in an intimate setting.
Some areas in Los Angeles have assisted living communities rooted in different faiths and cultures. For example, there are several Jewish assisted living communities in the Beverly Hills area offering Kosher-certified kitchens, Jewish cuisine, and religious services. Some are also located near synagogues and churches for seniors who wish to practice their faith outside of their assisted living facility. Los Angeles also has assisted living communities inspired by East Asian cultures, some of which are located in or near Little Tokyo.

As a major metropolitan area, New York City has no shortage of options for public transportation. Many residents choose not to own a car, and the city is undoubtedly navigable without one.
Options for getting around town include buses, taxis, subways, and in many neighborhoods, walking can allow you to accomplish most daily errands. You can find subway and bus routes, fare prices and more at the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) website.
New York City is considered one of the world’s great cultural hubs for good reason. Within a short walk or subway ride, you can find countless museums, galleries, and theaters, as well as beautiful outdoor parks, and restaurants to fit every taste and budget.
For recreation, take a stroll through Central Park or the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. For fun with the whole family, consider a trip to the Prospect Park Zoo! Meanwhile, for those who appreciate the arts, no trip to New York City would be complete without a stop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art — one of the world’s great art museums — or perhaps a show at the equally world-renowned Metropolitan Opera.
